She was an impressive intelligent, educated and devoted woman. She earned a doctoral degree and worked in a hospital with infectious disease patients until her conversion. After becoming a Catholic and joining the Carmelite nuns, she taught at Catholic school until the Nazi government forced her to quit due to her Jewish background.
Although the monastery moved Saint Edith Stein out of Germany to the Netherlands for her safety, the Nazi troops found her and sent her to the Auschwitz concentration camp where she and many thousands of other innocent people were heinously gassed to death.
She was canonized by Saint John Paul II and her feast day is August 9th. She is the patron saint of World Youth Day, Europe, the loss of one's parents, converted Jews and martyrs.
