Living a luxurious high life until her husband died after, widow and mother of five Paula plunged herself into a rigorously ascetic life, even going so far as to avoid bathing unless she was very ill. She transformed from a fashionista to a despiser of physical beauty. Paula devoted the rest of her life to caring for the poor and ill. She was a close friend of and assistant to St. Jerome.

St. Paula's feast day is January 26, and she is the patroness of widows.
