Saint Lawrence was a deacon of Rome. He was martyred in the persecution of Emperor Valerian in 258. He was ordained a deacon by Pope St Sixtus II, who also died for the faith with Lawrence. Emperor Valerian issued a decree that all bishops, priests, and deacons should be put to death, and that the treasure of the Church be confiscated. After Sixtus was arrested while celebrating Mass the imperial soldiers sought Lawrence. The deacons were responsible for the distribution of the Church’s wealth. They demanded of him that they show him the treasures of the Church. He asked for three days to gather them. During this time he distributed all of the Church’s money to the poor. When the time came to present the treasures to the emperor’s men, he showed them the poor and disabled that the Roman Church had been supporting. ‘The Church is truly rich,’ Lawrence said. ‘Far richer than your emperor.’

Lawrence was roasted alive on a gridiron and beheaded. His final words as he was martyred for the Christian faith; "Assum est. Versa et manduca." "This side's done. Turn me over and take a bite."

His name is mentioned in the First Eucharistic Prayer and he is one of the most well-known saints. His feast is on August 10. He is patron of the poor and one of the patrons of the city of Rome.
