Wearing a Saint Gertrude of Nivelles medal necklace is an ideal devotional for any keen gardener.
Saint Gertrude comes from a long line of Saints born to a family of very religious men and women. So devoted to her faith she turned down a marriage to a very wealthy nobleman. Instead, she became a nun and eventually abbess of the Monastery at Nivelles.
She is well known for helping spread the faith as her monastery was always welcoming Irish missionaries and other travelers. Her work also included giving land to build a monastery at Fosses in Belgium and also helping Saint Ultan in his missionary and evangelization efforts.
Before dying at the age of 33 (the same age as Christ) she passed the role of abbess to her niece and spent her remaining years reading scripture, doing penance and constantly praying. She prayed very specifically for those who had recently died as she feared for their extended time in purgatory.
Her feast day is March 17th. She is the patron saint of hotel and inn keepers, gardeners, and hospitals.
